A new dimension has emerged in the controversy concerning President Muhammadu Buhari’s comments about Nigerian youths in London last week, as a Lazy Nigerian Youths Wikipedia page has now appeared. According to the page, the Lazy Nigerian Youths is a social media revolt by Nigerian youths against their president.

The page pointed out that Buhari said a lot of Nigerian youths have not been to school, and that they want everything free because the country is an oil producing state . At the Commonwealth Business Forum, President Buhari stated: “More than 60 per cent of the population is below 30. A lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare, education free.”

The comment has not gone down well with many young Nigerians who translated the comment to mean that the president was referring to them as being lazy. The controversy then birthed the #LazyNigerianYouths trend on Twitter.

Meanwhile, as the world commemorates Innovation and Creativity Day, The Arts and Civil Table Organization (TACT) has urged the government to recognize and appreciate innovations and creativity by Nigerian youths. Leader of the Not-too-young- to-rule youth movement, Samson Itodo, who stated this during a Town Hall Meeting organized by TACT to mark the day in Abuja said the government has not done much to inspire the youths.

He maintained that Nigerian youths are celebrated across the world as very hardworking with great entrepreneurial abilities but unfortunately the political leaders have refused to recognize that young people have what it takes to drive economic development.

Itodo said “This event is coming at an auspicious time to inspire the Nigerian youths that even if the president says we are lazy we are demonstrating that we are indeed not lazy and showcasing young people doing excellent work who are hardworking in different sectors. We are not lazy, we are creative, innovative and we will continue to be”.

Stating that its insensitive for the President to make such comment and it should be condemned, he said “I expect that the President not only withdraw the statement but also affirm the creativity, the resillence of the Nigerian youths because this country is where it is today because Nigerian youths stood up to be counted”.He maintained that young people would continue to demonstrate that they are not lazy through hardwork, patriotism and commitment to the prosperity of Nigeria.
