Are Governors Afraid Of Asset Declaration?

Buhari

Buhari

Sir: When President Buhari and the vice-president declared their assets to the public, many Nigerians expect governors to follow suit. The constitution expects all political appointees to declare their assets before taking the mantle of leadership.

Nigerians are keen on seeing their governors emulate the president. The hesitance or refusal of state governors to declare their assets to the public has sent wrong signals to the society that they would find it difficult to key into President Buhari’s fight against corruption in the country.

One of the governors in the northern part of the country when asked why he did not declare his assets had to hide under the suit he filed against one newspaper for character assassination, hence his inability to publicly declare his assets to the public. The refusal of the governors shows how they are backsliding in fighting corruption in their states.

Emulating the president in this important exercise would go a long way to show to the world that Nigerian now is operating on a different, positive plane. The early declaration of governors’ assets publicly will clear the minds of ordinary Nigerians on the kind leaders they elected to pilot their affairs. Nigerians are eager to cooperate to see a new dawn in the country.

We hope the governors would still do the needful.
