NUJ decries hardship, tasks govt on solutions

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has decried the poor state of federal and state roads amid rising food prices across the country.
The union called for immediate and concrete measures to cushion the economic hardship which has lingered for over a year.

The group raised the alarm in a communique issued at the end of its quarterly National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Ibadan over the weekend (Saturday).

In the communique signed by National Secretary, Achike Chude, NUJ frowned at incessant vandalisation of electricity facilities in the Northeast and other parts of the country

Besides the poor state of roads and hunger, Chude, also warned politicians in Ondo and Edo to refrain from what he described as, “arbitrary attacks against journalists on essential duties during the forthcoming elections in the two states.”

The communique reads in part: “NEC mandates the National Secretariat to overhaul and reorganise the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), by instituting a new Governing Council for optimal performance.

“We condemn the lingering insecurity across the nation, particularly kidnapping and violent crimes in the South East, insurgency in the North East, banditry in the North West and rising militancy in the South-South, as well as kidnapping in the South West and cattle rustling and herders’ attack in the North Central region.”

Chude called on the heads of the nation’s security agencies to rise to the occasion. He also urged the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Ministry of Power to immediately restore electricity supply to states affected by power cuts in the North.
