The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as “provocative,” the insinuation by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike that President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned visit to the state was political.

State APC Chairman, Davies Ikanya, said the governor’s comment was aimed at inciting the people of the state against the President, having also insinuated that Buhari abandoned the state since he assumed office.

Ikanya argued that the President’s visit is to commiserate with the people of Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Council, where gunmen, led by late Oluchi Igwedibia, alias Obatosu, and his late brother and kidnap kingpin, Don Wanny, massacred over 20 persons returning from church on January 1, this year.

The APC chairman also described Wike’s statement that the President was coming to the state to revive the crisis-ridden party as “laughable,” saying Wike cannot describe a party with two senators from the state to be a dying party.

On the issue of insecurity, Ikanya said if the state were not plagued by security challenges, the state government would not be budgeting a whopping sum of money to establish Neighborhood Watch.

He also denied the allegation that Buhari has abandoned Rivers State since assuming office, recalling that Vice President Yemi Osibanjo had been to the state a couple of times to represent the President.

“For avoidance of doubt, the party recalled that Osibanjo, with the express approval of Buhari, visited Rivers State to kick-start the Ogoni cleanup exercise abandoned by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) federal government, with the connivance of Wike, visited Rivers State to kick-start the Bonny-Bodo Road and was in Rivers State in another occasion to inaugurate the world-class fertilizer plant built by Indorama Eleme Fertilizer and Chemicals Limited in Port Harcourt, among other visits by the Presidency,” he said.
