The United Nations Human Rights Commission on Refugees (UNCHR) has donated a total of 22,220 relief materials worth over N18 million to the victims of flood in Benue state.

The United Nations Human Rights Commission on Refugees (UNCHR) has donated a total of 22,220 relief materials worth over N18 million to the victims of flood in Benue state. The materials include 2,700 blankets, 5,400 sanitary pads, 1,080 solar lanterns, 2,700 inner wears, 5,400 antiseptic bottles, 5,400 detergent sachets and 540 mattresses.

Handing over the materials to the government of Benue state, the Head of UNHCR Field Unit in Benue, Samuel Agwa, said the commission was making the donation to support the government in providing relief to the victims.

He said the commission and the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Civil Society Organizations and other stakeholders worked out the sharing formula for the materials, which they are going to adhere to strictly.

According to him, the commission was using available statistics of flood victims generated by SEMA and the civil society organizations to share goods to victims, adding that the materials would be shared according to the needs of the victims, as pregnant women would be treated differently from the aged and children.

He said bulk SMS would be sent to victims who would be expected to respond to them within 78 hours to receive their materials.

Receiving the materials, the chairman of relief materials committee and Deputy Governor of Benue state, Benson Abounu, insisted that no camp was closed as reported and described the announcement of the closure of IDP camps in the state as “ an act of mischief”.
