TRAGEDY struck at the weekend in Okwu- Umuoma, Nekede, Owerri West Local Council of Imo state, when a two-storey building hitherto under construction allegedly collapsed, killing two workers at the site.

In April, a three-storey building, still under construction, in Orji, Owerri North Local Council of the state, also collapsed, injuring scores.

The Guardian gathered that two of the site Engineers were reported to have been trapped in the rubbles, prompting a rescue team to scramble to their rescue. Two dead bodies of site workers were, however, recovered while others were taken to an undisclosed hospital in the area, according to a source.

According to the source, the major cause of the ugly incident may not be unconnected with the use of sub-standard materials for the construction work.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was busy when The Guardian called. He could not pick his phone for conversation on the issue.
