Salami was said to have assisted a car owner, who is also an employee of the institution, to drive his vehicle from Ilorin, the state capital, to Oro, some 60km apart, before the tragic incident happened around 10:00a.m.

An administrative worker at the College of Education, Oro in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Mr. Kunle Salami, was reportedly struck dead by thunder yesterday at the football field of the school during a prolonged rain that started at dawn, lasting nine hours.

Salami was said to have assisted a car owner, who is also an employee of the institution, to drive his vehicle from Ilorin, the state capital, to Oro, some 60km apart, before the tragic incident happened around 10:00a.m.

According to sources, “immediately he pulled up the car, he started trekking to his office in company of two others when the thunder struck him, lifted him up from the ground, smashed him on the ground and tore his jeans cloth into shreds.”

It was learnt that the rain, a very light one without an accompanying storm, was not the type usually identified with lightening and heavy thunderstorms.

The sad incident threw the campus into a pandemonium as many students and workers hurriedly fled for their homes, while only a pocket of brave workers formed a circle round the lifeless body praying for his resuscitation but without touching it.

When all efforts to revive him proved futile, his friends were said to have beckoned on some ‘Sango’ worshippers from Omu Aran to appease the deity believed to be responsible for the death before his remains could be conveyed for burial.

A former chairman of Board of Governors of the institution, Chief Wole Oke, described the incident as a common occurrence in Yoruba communities, just as he prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased. Oke’s tenure expired last year.
