Ibikunle Amosun, Governor of Ogun State.

A meeting by the Mohammed Indabawa-led committee assigned to conduct the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary was yesterday disrupted by sporadic gunshots.

The election, earlier scheduled for Sunday, could not hold for yet to be given reasons.

The committee meeting had begun at about 11:00 p.m. inside the government-owned Mitros residence, Ibara, Abeokuta, but few minutes into the meeting, supporters of two factions within the party who had gathered outside were said to have disagreed on an issue.

The disagreement resulted into fisticuffs and later gunshots.

The eight-man electoral committee members hurriedly called off the meeting with the governorship aspirants and other stakeholders and sneaked out for safety.

In the last coupled of days, confusion and apprehension had continued to prevail in Abeokuta over the planned governorship primary.

Five of the party’s governorship aspirants had on Sunday alleged in a petition to the state security agencies that some politicians, in connivance with some policemen, had hatched plans to arrest their supporters during the primary.

Also, two days earlier, two suspects who were using drone to allegedly monitor the activities going on at the private residence of former Governor Olusegun Osoba in Abeokuta were arrested.

Six persons – Abdulkabir Adekunle Akinlade (Ogun West), Senator Gbenga Kaka (Ogun East), Otunba Bimbo Ashiru (Ogun East), Prince Dapo Abiodun (Ogun East), Jimi Lawal (Ogun East) and Abayomi Hunye (Ogun West) are locked in a keen battle for the APC governorship ticket and were all in attendance at the meeting.

During the fracas, a security aide of Governor Ibikunle Amosun was alerted and immediately rushed to the scene to make arrest.

The Guardian, however, gathered that as soon as arrest was made, another batch of armed political thugs stormed the venue and began to shoot sporadically into the air allegedly unchallenged.

Meanwhile, a source said: “The latest episode of violence in Ogun politics is another indication that all is not well within the ruling party in the state.

It is disheartening to experience this dastardly act in the premises provided by the state government.”

In another development, Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Kunle Oluomo, escaped armed attack yesterday when armed gang, suspected to be political thugs, reportedly invaded his constituency office in Ifo demanding his whereabouts.

The suspects did not meet Oluomo but they were said to have thoroughly ransacked the constituency office, vandalised the window panes and four school buses parked at the premises.

While Oluomo confirmed the attack on him, the Ogun State Police Command’s Spokeman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was not aware of the incident.
