Teachers to embark on indefinite strike over non-payment of salaries
National President, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Michael Olukoya has said that 18 branches of the Union across the country will embark on indefinite strike next week.
Olukoya stated this on Friday, in Birnin Kebbi, when he led Kebbi chapter of the Union in a peaceful rally to the House of Assembly to demand teachers should not be under local government.
Armed with different placards, the protesters said, “we say no to local government autonomy with teachers; free teachers from local government harassment; funding of education should be by FG or State alone.”
Addressing protesters, Olukoya represented by National Social Secretary, Comrade Issah Yunusa, said June 30,2017 is the deadline for governors who refused to pay teachers salaries. Though Olukoya did not mention the affected states, he said Kebbi State does not owe teachers.The Speaker, Alhaji Abdulmumeen Samaila Kamba, represented by the Deputy Clerk, Alhaji Muhammadu Maidama, promised to forward their demands to the Speaker.
