Public schools in Taraba are on the verge of transforming their battered image, as members of the Executive Council of the state have made an approval for the immediate recruitment of three thousand teachers.

The development is part of the implementation of the recent ban lift on employment into the civil service.Briefing journalists shortly after their meeting which took place at the government house yesterday in Jalingo, the state capital, the commissioner of education, Johaness Jigem along side his counterparts from the Ministry of Justice, Yusuf Akirinkwen and the Head of Service, Simon Angyu, said the approval was relevant in addressing the present predicaments of public schools.

The council directed that only qualified candidates from the state with the basic background in education should apply. They also agreed that the issue of federal character should be adhered to. The said approval, the commissioners said, was necessitated by the recent performance recorded by the state in last year’s West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) exams, stressing that the present administration placed a high premium on education.

Seventy percent of the recruitment would be given to candidates with science backgrounds, while the remaining thirty percent, go to candidates with social science and Arts background.

Before now, public schools in the state were in a sorry state, as most of them had been deserted due to the inability of the state government to recruit qualified personnel to teach pupils.
