South Africa: Durban to host 2022 Commonwealth Games
The announcement was made in Auckland, New Zealand on Wednesday.
Canadian city and previous host Edmonton withdrew from the 2022 race in February, citing financial concerns, leaving the South African port city as the only remaining bidder.
Commonwealth Games Federation president Louise Martin described Wednesday’s announcement as “a historic decision’’.
The Commonwealth Games are an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. Eighteen cities in seven countries have hosted the event.
Although there are 53 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 71 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as a number of dependent territories compete under their own flag.
The four Home Nations of the U.K. – England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – also send separate teams.
The next Games are in Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018.
