Society urges Nigeria to guard against chemical warfare

The Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) yesterday enjoined the Federal Government to secure the environment against the threat posed by global use of chemical weapons. It, therefore, called on all tiers of government to strengthen regulatory and legal frameworks to reinforce chemical security in the country.

Members pointed out that the professional advice would reduce global chemical threat and prevent terrorists from weaponisable chemicals.

At its international conference and workshop in Kaduna, delegates at the event, with the theme, Green Chemistry as a catalyst for economic growth and national security, asked government to be proactive while responding to the realities of the time.

The highpoint was the election of Professor Sunday Olawale Okeniyi as the body’s new president and he is to steer its affairs with his team for the next three years.

No fewer than 600 delegates from all over the world attended the conference.

In a communiqué, the society observed that Nigeria’s economy was increasingly being threatened by chemical warfare, drugs and violence.

It suggested that a workshop should be organised as a precursor to the introduction of green chemistry while urging government to key into the concept by advocating a bio-based economy.
