Senate to hold valedictory session, Reps adjourn plenary to honour Adeleke

The Senate yesterday adjourned plenary till today to hold a valedictory session in honour of its late Chairman, Committee on Capital Market, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.

Barely 20 minutes after the votes and proceedings were adopted, Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, who moved for adjournment said: “Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, it is the practice and convention of this Senate and indeed the National Assembly to always show respect and honour our dear colleagues by adjourning our plenary sessions.

“I will therefore say that because of the death of our colleague I will move a motion that this Senate observes a one minute silence and thereafter adjourn till tomorrow, the 26th of April, 2017.”

Also yesterday, the House of Representatives adjourned sitting in honour of Adeleke. In his condolence message ahead of the adjournment, Deputy Speaker of the House, Yusuf Lasun recalled the last moments of the late senator with his family.

He said: “Senator Isiaka Adeleke will be greatly missed for his kindness. He was also a philanthropist.” The Senate motion was seconded by Minority Whip, Senator Philip Aduda.

In his remarks, Senate President, Bukola Saraki announced that they would hold a valedictory sitting today in honour of the late senator and advised his colleagues to dress accordingly for the session.

As soon as the House of Representatives adjourned sitting, Speaker Yakubu Dogara led leaders of the House to sign the condolence register for the late politician before proceeding to meet Saraki to condole him and his colleagues over the loss.

The House resumes plenary sitting today. Former governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande also mourned Adeleke. He described the late senator as a young vibrant statesman who would be remembered for a long time.
