A songwriters and singers’ seminar holds 10 a.m. today at CLCC Hall, Olaiya Street, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

It is being organized by Melodies From Heaven. Convener of the seminar and singer, songwriter and author, Adebimpe Katherina Afolabi, said the need for the seminar was borne out of the concern to cement the gap between songwriting and the singing.

Afolabi is the CEO of Melodies from Heaven. She recently authored a book titled Melodies from Heaven. It is a book on the “art, act and heart” of writing songs. It also teaches song writers to write responsively by passing across a definite valuable message to the hearers. She also has magazine which will be launched after the training event today.

The ultimate vision of the organization is to eventually have a state-of-the-art studio, where recordings can be done by youths at a very affordable rate while also ensuring proper marketing structure and protection for their music.

It has been observed that the rights of songwriters are not adequately protected in our country, she noted.

She is the author of the popular worship song Hosanna ta lo da bire and other songs like Joy in the city, child of a king, Wazobia, Ose Baba, Kabiyesi, Next level, Created to worship, Melodies from heaven, Orin Tuntun as well as carol songs Christmas in the air, Messiah, Something about Christmas, Silent night etc.

Afolabi said: “Many write songs but don’t sing; others don’t write songs but can sing. The seminar will focus on both writer and singer. Both have a relationship with the song, which is given expression by the singer and it brings us to the art, act and heart of songwriting.”

A crop of professionals will be on hand to enlighten participants on the various aspects of song composition and delivery in the form of practical sessions with Yetunde Chorus, a seasoned vocalist and voice coach, Olufunmi, an experienced singer and songwriter as well as Anthony Livingstone, an animator, author and music trainer. The seminar attracts a modest fee inclusive of lunch and seminar materials.

“Music has traditionally played an important role in African culture, it’s essential in representing the strong African heritage and its importance can be seen in many aspects of our culture, traditional marriage rites and many more events.

“It is not certain where music came from, but it is certain that music predates the existence of mankind. Music came from God himself. Most people simply know that certain lucky individuals are born with a talent for music and that’s the main factor in how well they perform.”
