Royal Star visits The Guardian, praises roles of media in nation building

More than 60 students of Royal Star Group of Schools, Itire, Lagos State got a close-up and hands-on view of newspaper production yesterday when they paid a visit to Rutam House, the corporate headquarters of The Guardian.

The students, who visited alongside five of their teachers, had an experience they won’t forget in a hurry, as they were shown around and taught the various stages and processes involved in newspapering.

Abiodun James, who led the students to The Guardian, said: “This visit is very important because many of the students have never see anything like this before, especially these days where there is a dearth of career counselors.

“Many of them always say they want to become a lawyer, an engineer or accountant in future because that is the discipline they hear people talk about around them, but to be exposed to the media world where every discipline is welcomed is an eye-opener.”

The News Editor, Mr. Marcel Mbamalu, spoke to the students on the role of journalists in nation building, which according to one of them, makes him want to consider a career in journalism after completing his tertiary education.

“I don’t think we can get to where we are as a country with the present system of democracy without the media. There is a saying that ‘the press can make what is wrong to be right and what is right to be wrong’, but with The Guardian, we can always expect what is right according to its motto: Conscience Nurtured By Truth. I am really happy to have visited one of the leading newspapers in Africa,” he said.
