A bill aimed at ensuring the establishment of the federal university of technology, Auchi in Edo State has made significant inroads on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The bill sponsored by Mr Johnson Oghuma scaled the second reading stage at the plenary presided by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.
The bill which seeks to upgrade the Federal Polytechnic Auchi to a degree awarding institution was referred to the Aminu Sulaiman-led committee on Tertiary Education for further scrutiny.

Oghuma who represents Etsako federal constituency of Edo State justified the initiative saying it was aimed at paving the way for the optimal utilization of facilities and manpower in Auchi Polytechnic.

His words: “The resources in terms of manpower and infrastructure existing in the federal polytechnic Auchi surpass those in most federal universities of science and technology in Nigeria. Therefore maintaining federal polytechnic as a polytechnic amounts to underutilization of scarce resources.

“Another reason is the need to key into the global standards where polytechnics are now being converted to universities to bridge the gap and harmonize standards of tertiary education. In developed nations like the United Kingdom which Nigeria took after and the USA, most polytechnics have been converted to universities of technology and this has helped to upgrade standards of education generally.

He further listed the need to reduce the increasing numbers of prospective undergraduates in Nigeria and the provision of the much needed space for post- graduate studies as reason for the establishment of the university.
