Finland said on Friday in Copenhagen that it was willing to “voluntarily” agree to take in 2,400 asylum seekers as part of an EU-wide plan to relocate 120,000 people.

“In this acute phase we will take part voluntarily,” Interior Minister Petteri Orpo told newsmen.

Orpo, however, underlined that Finland opposed a mandatory system.

The European Commission this week proposed that 120,000 asylum seekers be relocated from Greece, Italy and Hungary to other EU members under a fixed distribution key.

Orpo said that Finland supports the idea of creating a list of safe countries, to offer faster processing of asylum claims.

The Finnish Interior Ministry has projected 30,000 asylum seekers this year, compared to the about 3,600 people who registered last year.

Meanwhile, Denmark which has opted out from the EU asylum system, also ruled out taking part in the proposed quota system.

“We have received many already,” Integration Minister Inger Stojberg told newsmen.

“We have an opt-out and we already take in many,” she added.

Danish authorities have projected 20,000 asylum seekers this year, up from almost 14,800 in 2014.

Denmark’s minority government of centre-right liberals has pushed through cuts in benefits for newly arrived asylum seekers and other measures to make Denmark less attractive for migrants
