Redeemer’s University has capability to curb Lassa fever, VC declares
The Vice Chancellor of the Redeemer’s University, Prof. Debo Adeyewa, has disclosed that the school has capacity to curb Lassa fever.He gave the hint during the 13th matriculation of the university in Ede, Osun State.
According to him, the institution has the capability to contain and eliminate Lassa fever through its research activities.Adeyewa accused the Federal Government of insincerity in not collaborating and supporting its World Bank-sponsored African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases.He said it was unfortunate that this is happening at a critical moment that Lassa fever is rampaging the country.
He lamented that the Federal Government has not encouraged the school in its efforts, despite that it had spent millions of naira to conduct research relating to infectious diseases.
He said: “We are the only university that has been addressing the issues scientifically. We have done research on Lassa fever. We are behind the scene, providing solutions to Lassa fever in the country.
“Our centre of excellence is currently supporting the containment of the Lassa fever scourge, which is being managed at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State.”He disclosed that the varsity had previously demonstrated the needed capacity to other outbreak of hemorrhagic fevers as Ebola Virus disease and Monkey Pox.
Also, the Director of ACEGID, Prof. Christian Happi, disclosed that the university has the necessary equipment to carry out research for the containment of Lassa fever.
