Police says remarkable achievements made in 11th Police games

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Wednesday said it recorded remarkable achievements in the just-ended 11th-biennial games held in Abuja than it did at Port Harcourt in 2014.

The Force Sports’ Secretary, Anderson Bankole, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The Games tagged: “ Abuja 2016,’’ was held between March 19 and March 26 at the National Stadium, Abuja.

Bankole said that all schedules followed due process and the stipulated time allocated to them.

“The games have strengthened the spirit of unity within the force, it must not allow it to radiate only within its rank and file but must also be extended to civilians.

“I want the officers and men of the force to use the opportunity provided by the Games and the spirit of sportsmanship displayed during the competition in the discharge of their duties,’’ the DCP said.

The secretary added that the good conduct exhibited by the officers that participated in the games earned them the achievements they recorded.

“We recorded a more remarkable outing in Abuja than the previous edition in Port Harcourt. All the athletes behaved themselves and exhibited high levels of discipline which helped us to have a smooth competition.

“All schedules followed due process and the stipulated time allocated to them. I am impressed by their conduct throughout the one-week competition,’’ he said.

He urged the officers and men who had since returned to their various commands to uphold the integrity of the force.

NAN reports that the Force Headquarters and 12 zones participated in the one-week event.

Zone 2 emerged the overall winner at the Games with 231 medals comprising 96 gold, 77 silver and 58 bronze.
Force Headquarters came second with 70 gold, 41 silver and 48 bronze medals, while Zone 11 was third with 56 gold, 44 silver and 68 bronze medals.

NAN reports that the Games featured 28 sports that include: athletics, badminton, boxing, chess, dart, golf, squash, kickboxing, swimming, tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, karate, judo, wrestling, weightlifting and rugby.

Others are: hockey, football, polo, basketball, volleyball, handball, scrabble, tug-of-war, wushu kungfu, cycling and shooting.
