Police officer goes berserk, kills polytechnic graduate in Kogi State
A trigger-happy police officer in Kogi State allegedly shot dead a polytechnic graduate, Mohammed Ismail, in Ajaokuta Local Council on Sunday.
The late Ismail, a father of one, met his untimely death while attending a political rally of one of the chairmanship aspirants in the council at the football pitch of the Local Government Secondary School, Ajaokuta.
The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. when the aspirant was unfolding his plans for the council if he is elected the chairman.
It was at this point that the policeman suddenly opened fire. One of the bullets hit the deceased’s left rib.
The development led to pandemonium. Everyone scampered for safety. What led to the action could not be explained.
However, some people at the event said they were not surprised with policeman’s behaviour. They alleged that the law enforcement agent was under the influence of alcohol, as he was said to be “ very high” at the time he committed the heinous act.
The deceased, who was described as “quiet and easygoing man by some members of the community’,” died in a nearby hospital.
Ismail, said to be an HND graduate of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, was later buried around 7.30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, who confirmed the incident, promised to give further details later.
