Police arrest woman for allegedly injuring maid with electric iron, hot water
It was learnt that the suspect, a mother of four, brought her 10-year-old househelp by name, Chioma Samuel, to Lagos from Umuoju, Ngwu in Abia State, in January 2018, after the death of the girl’s father.
The Guardian gathered that rather than keeping to the promise of letting Chioma have a good life in Lagos, which was made to the victim’s mother before Chioma was handed over to her, she made life a living hell for the child. The maid was mentally and physically abused with many injury marks on her body to show for it.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Lagos command, Chike Oti, Chioma’s latest tale of woes was on Wednesday, March 7, when the suspect allegedly used a well heated electric iron to cause grievous injury on the victim’s hands and legs and also poured hot water on her, which scalded her skin.
He said by the next day, March 8, Nkeiru’s cup got filled to the brim when she brought her children to a private school located somewhere in Ikeja, and unfortunately for her, the prying eyes of other mothers who came to the school to drop off their wards, noticed the gaping wounds on the upper and lower limbs of the victim, who had accompanied the suspect to the school.
“After questioning the girl, they waited for her madam, who had gone to drop her kids in their different classrooms. When she finished and was about to drive off, these women confronted her. Some teachers who heard their voices later calmed them.
“The women told the suspect to take the girl to a hospital or else they would petition the Commissioner of Police, whom Lagosians have come to know as one who takes strong stance against such crimes against children, women and vulnerable persons in the society.
“In spite of their warning to report her to the authorities, the suspect came to the school on Friday, March 9, accompanied by the victim, whose wounds were manifestly untreated. With their warnings taken for granted, the women made good their promise, and called the attention of the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, to the matter.
“The police boss immediately ordered the arrest of the woman and directed the Gender Section of the command to take the child-victim to police hospital for proper treatment until the Social Welfare Department of the Lagos State government comes for her. Meanwhile, the suspect would be arraigned in court today.
