Police arrest three over assassination of PDP ward chairman in Delta

The Delta State police command has confirmed the arrest of three persons in connection with last Friday’s brutal assassination of the Okpe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward chairman, in the state, Mr. Felix Okugbeni.

The Delta State police command has confirmed the arrest of three persons in connection with last Friday’s brutal assassination of the Okpe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward chairman, in the state, Mr. Felix Okugbeni.

Okugbeni was shot severally by suspected hired assassins while inside a tricycle in front of his residence around 8:45p.m. Most of the shots according to autopsy reports landed in the chest and stomach region, killing the grassroots politician on the spot.

A lady occupant of the tricycle in which Okugbeni was killed also sustained gunshots injuries. The lady identified as Gloria Aragba is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the state.

The police command through its spokesman, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the incident, saying that three persons have been arrested in connection with the killing. The suspects were identified as Junior Dele, Emma Francis and Ejoke Onome from Ughwagba.He disclosed that the suspects were presently undergoing investigation by the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The PDP leader was assassinated hours after the Okpe Local Council chairman, Prince Godwin Ejinyere, who is seeking re-election in the forthcoming council elections in the state, visited the Okugbeni-led PDP executive in Ughwagba community.

The killing, The Guardian gathered led to the destruction and burning of several houses in Ughwagba. The community is said to have been desolate as residents fled for the fear of further attacks by angry party loyalist.

The view was rife in some sections of the community that the killing had political undertone as the deceased was ambushed and killed after the visit of the council chairman to the community.

It was further learnt that the deceased had left the community after hosting the visit of the council chairman in his tricycle and that he was on his way home in company of a lady that he was ambushed by the gun-wielding men in front of his house.
