PDP Reps caucus seeks holistic probe of past govts
HOUSE of Representatives caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has backed President Mohammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade but tasked the government on a holistic probe rather than limiting it to the immediate past leadership of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the caucus cautioned against the government’s media prosecution of alleged “corrupt officers under the Jonathan administration,” adding that there should be no “status bar” and limitation in the anti-graft fight as government renews the drive to rid the country of the menace.
Spokesman of the group, Kwewum Rima Shawulu, warned that probing only the Jonathan government would not be acceptable, stating: “You don’t take action as if you have a predetermined position in mind. Corruption should be fought holistically and not arbitrarily, and should not be fought on the pages of newspapers.”
He disclosed that the opposition PDP members played a pivotal role in the emergence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presiding officers in the parliament, and that the caucus would work with the leadership to provide the needed legislative interventions for the benefit of all Nigerians.
“We’ll give every cooperation to the APC leadership to enable the government fulfill its promises to the Nigerian people. We’ll cooperate with the House leadership to enable it stabilise the legislature,” he said.
While pledging support to the House leadership, the lawmaker, however, hinted that the PDP has already begun to re-strategise to reclaim power at the centre in 2019.
He cited the scenario in Ghana where the leadership of the opposition, not knowing what to do after grabbing power at the centre, failed to fulfill its electoral promises to the people while busying itself with frivolities and prosecution of opponents, and consequently lost the next election.
