Oyo Assembly seeks life jail for kidnappers

Oyo State House of Assembly yesterday prescribed life imprisonment for those found guilty of kidnapping in the state.

Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary and Justice, Olukayode Akande while submitting the report on Oyo State Kidnapping (Prohibition) Bill, 2015, said the punishment of life imprisonment has been recommended for anyone found guilty of successful kidnap in the state.

Akande said the House prescribed 20 years imprisonment for anyone who aid kidnapping while 15 years imprisonment awaits anyone found to have harboured a kidnapped person, adding that anyone that lies or gives a false information of being kidnapped, the penalty is seven years imprisonment

Meanwhile, following a motion by Gbenga Oyekola, representing Atiba State Constituency and co-sponsored by Peter Oyetunji, representing OgoOluwa/ Surulere constituency on the usage of Yoruba language in schools, the lawmakers called on parents, guardians, teachers as well as authorities in both public and private primary and secondary schools across the state to ensure the usage, reading as well as teaching of Yoruba language.

Oyekola, who urged parents to mandate their wards to speak Yoruba language while at home and in school.
