To stem the violent clashes between Fulani headsmen and their host communities, the Osun state House of Assembly has directed that a task force be set up to monitor and control the entry and exit of cattle rearers in the state.

The directive was sequel to the report of alleged indiscriminate grazing of farmland by cattle, which the lawmakers believed was capable of causing crisis in the state.

The Speaker, Najeem Salaam, gave the directive at a meeting with the state Committee on Peaceful Co-existence between Fulani/Bororo and Crop Farmers as well as officials of the state Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

He said the state’s two major entry points, Iwo and Ila axis, should be properly manned by the panel to control the movement of the herdsmen.

According to him, the itinerant Fulanis could not be left uncontrolled while the crops that took hardwork to raise were being destroyed, adding that such was denying the farmers good returns on their investments.

Also speaking, chairman of the peaceful co-existence panel, Oguntola Toogun, regretted that most farmers were now being discouraged due to the destruction of their crops by cattle.

He also expressed worry over alleged attacks on famers by the herdsmen during grazing.

Toogun submitted that since the issue was a national problem, enabling laws should be enacted by both the state and national legislatures to proffer a lasting solution to the matter.
