•CLO condemns non-conduct of council election in Anambra

Abia State ex-Governor Governor, Theodore Orji has canvased the adoption of whistleblowing to curb electoral malpractices. He made the call while addressing his constituents at a hall meeting in Umuahia at the weekend.

Orji, who is the Senator representing Abia Central, said those defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were riding on other people’s back to attain public offices.

He urged the people to remain in the PDP, which he said, had sustained the peace and unity in the area. The senator attributed the unity to the zoning process initiated by the PDP to facilitate the emergence of the state governor from Ukwa Ngwa in the 2015 election.

Orji promised his constituents of his continued effective representation, adding that he had moved three passed motions and sponsored nine in less than two years as their representative.

Orji also called for independent candidacy in elections, saying it would help to determine strong and acceptable candidates on merit, as well as check the defection of candidates from one political party to another. He urged them to ignore negative comments against him and work towards the party’s victory in future elections.

Meanwhile, the South East Zone of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has expressed worry at the failure of the Anambra State government to conduct council election in the state.

The group’s zonal Chairman, Alloysius Attah, accused successive governments of violating the constitutional provisions. He explained that the tenure of the local councils’ chairmen and councilors elected at the twilight of the Peter Obi’s administration expired on January 12, 2016 after their two-year tenure.

In a statement in Awka, the group faulted the extension of their tenure by Governor Willie Obiano, citing Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guaranteed that each state must hold election under section 8 of the constitution.Attah said the existing transition council is alien to the constitution and declared it as illegal.
