Ondo State Government has denied that it instructed workers in its Board of Internal Revenue office (BIR) to undergo competency test.
The state Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade said yesterday that what government plans for them “is an in-house training which requires sending our revenue personnel to reputable tax institutions to improve and build on their capacity.”

The commissioner disclosed that the training would empower the workers on capacity building and expose them to trendy practices in taxation and other related areas for better performance.

He said that after the training; they would have acquired the necessary wherewithal to cope with the growing challenges peculiar to revenue collection in a fast growing economy like Nigeria.

“It has nothing to do with testing their competence. What the government planned to do is the standard practice all over; it is not peculiar to Ondo State or government establishment alone.”

“Organisations all over the world identify areas of improvement in their workers and train them for optimal performance.”

“That is exactly what the government wants to do in the case of the workers in the Board of Internal Revenue,” he explained.
