IN compliance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive for the harmonization of the different sectors biometric database nationwide, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) yesterday said it has commenced the synchronization of information at its storage with that of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Also, yesterday, the Director-General of NIMC assured the commission would harmonise its database with that of the National Population Commission (NPC). Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi said during a familiarization meeting with the NIMC management that the Corps was ready for immediate implementation of the Presidential directive. T

he NIMC D-G, while speaking with the media yesterday in Abuja after his team’s visit to the FRSC, cited past unsatisfactory conduct of the Central Bank of Nigeria during same process of data centralization.

Onyemenam added that the integration of the database could work through highlighting the Laws as enshrined in the constitution, institutions, networks and the identity card. He explained that the authentication and verification of data involves two basic types of identity including “who you are, your eligibility, entitlement to benefits and ability to participate in the scheme.”

The integration project which is expected for easier access to individual and corporate distinctiveness will entail merging of all previous data from the FRSC, the Nigerian Police Force, Independent National Electoral Commission, Bank Verification Number, National Population Commission and others.

FRSC boss Oyeyemi stressed that for efficient identity management, “a proper accountability and improved workforce efficiency that will translate into quick returns on investments.”

According to Oyeyemi, data format on both systems should be identified, type of data needed should be identified for mutual benefits and to reduce multiple registration.

The Corps Marshal said that it was imperative to harmonize the collection and usage of biometric data in a fast developing economy like Nigeria.

Onyemenam cited the five components of identity management to include data capturing, processing the captured data, and storing it, issuance of unique identity number.
