The Nigerian Medical Association {NMA} has said that the on-going strike by doctors in Osun state enjoys it support and therefore asks the State governor, Rauf Aregbesola to return to the negotiation table with its members in the employ of the state government.

The association said instead of threatening to sack them for engaging on legitimate industrial action, the governor should engaged the doctors and resolve the industrial dispute.

The association described alleged intimidation of its members working in government facilities in the state as provocative, insensitive and unacceptable saying the utterance by the governor is not expected in a democratic setting.

Addressing reporters yesterday at OSAMDO House, Osogbo, the state chairman of NMA, Dr Suraj Ogunyemi said the on-going strike by doctors enjoyed the support of the parent medical association.

He frowned against the threat by the state authorities to relief the doctors of their job if they failed to return to duty at the expiration given saying the directive was an assault on the collective responsibility of doctors in the country.

Ogunyemi, who appealed to citizens in the state to show understanding with the doctors, said the doctors were pushed to the wall for their action adding that the strike was avoidable but government alleged failure to play its part caused it.

The NMA chairman alleged that salaries of some doctors had been stopped as part of strategy by the government to break their rank.
Meanwhile, Aregbesola has inaugurated a nine-man governing board headed by Prof Wole Atoyebi to oversee the running of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Osogbo.

Members of the Board are: Dr. Kayode Akinlade, Dr. Ademola Akintolu Onifade, Oba Dr. Folorunso Agboade Makanju Olaniyan, Acting Chief Medical Director LAUTECH, Prof Akeem Lasisi; Permanent Secretary Osun Ministry of Health, Dr. Temitope Olalekan Oladele.

The rest are: Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Osun State, Dr. Surajudeen Ogunyemi; Provost, College of Medicine, LAUTECH, Prof. Samuel Sunday Taiwo and Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Daniel Adebode Adekanle.

The Governor while inaugurating the new board stated that the inauguration was coming at a time, when public finance is at its lowest point on account of falling oil price and uncertainties at the global economy.

But the governor said this was the more reason members of the board must be ready for the hard task of running the institution as a world class one without passing undue burden on patients.
