NLC threatens to follow up on banks withholding bailout funds workers’ salaries

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday said it would ensure it followed up on banks withholding the bailout funds being provided by the Federal Government for payment of workers’ salary.

nlcThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday said it would ensure it followed up on banks withholding the bailout funds being provided by the Federal Government for payment of workers’ salary.

Mr Ayubu Wabba, the NLC President said this at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NLC in Abuja, while commending the bailout by the Federal Government.

He pleaded with banks holding back the bailout funds for the payment of workers’ salaries in states to consider the interest of workers in the affected states.

Wabba threatened that such banks would be followed up to ensure that workers did not suffer for the inability of state government to pay its debt.

He said that the NLC would look into states that were yet to pay salaries and take appropriate action, adding that the NLC was poised to bring reprieve in the ways of workers in the states.

“NLC will not fold its hands and see that workers are not paid. Salary is not the only area where bail out has been extended. In the past, the Federal Government had bailed out banks,” he said.

He condemned the financial recklessness of some state governments, which according to him had led to a lot of states not being able to pay salaries.

He, however, commended the National Council of State for the bailout, adding that in spite of the gesture by the Federal Government the worker were yet to enjoy the benefit.

Wabba urged the states to ensure that they got their priority right rather than engage in act that would shut the workers out of jobs.

“The issue of salary payment is very important and must not be toyed with by state or any private organisation. (
