The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, has advised the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to decentralise its registration centres.

The state NUJ Secretary, Mr Abdallah el-Kurebe, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Sunday.

El-Kurebe said the decentralisation was to give room for more people to get registered, noting that the centres should be spread across the 23 local government areas.

He observed that the exercise, which is currently being conducted at the commission’s headquarters in the metropolis, would not give room for many people to be registered.

According to him, it is only by setting up additional registration centres across all local government areas that the people can fully participate in the exercise.

He, however, advised residents not to relent in their efforts to obtain the national identity card for future purposes.

The secretary also solicited the support of religious and traditional leaders in sensitising the people to come out enmass and participate in the exercise in view of its importance.

He appealed to religious leaders to embark on “aggressive sermons’’ on the importance of acquiring the card in the interest of the socio- economic and political growth of the state and the country in general.
