Reps want Jonathan to pick VP from North- West

MEMBERS of the House of Representatives from the North-West geo-political zone have asked President Goodluck Jonathan to choose his Vice President from the zone.

They pointed out that choosing the Vice President from any other part of the North “will amount to shutting out the North-West from the centre of power in Nigeria and would definitely not be in the strategic interest of Mr. President.”

Addressing a press conference at the National Assembly yesterday, the North-West caucus, which incidentally control the largest number of lawmakers in the House of Representatives argued that it was only fair to allow the zone to produce the Vice President, having lost the position of the President that it got through the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The text of the press conference, which was read by the chairman of the Caucus, Bashir Adamu Kazaure, read in parts:

“We urge Mr. President to remain steadfast and be guided in all his actions by the principles of equity and fairness. It is in this wise therefore that we wish to humbly call on Mr. President to consider the North-West as the natural zone for the selection of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Our late President hailed from the North-West Zone and was snatched away by the cold hands of death before the completion of his tenure. It is only fair and just that a person from the North-West be selected to fill the vacant position of Vice President.”

The Caucus observed that denying the North- West of the position could be dangerous to the unity of the North and Nigeria in general.

The caucus added: “The current intense scheming to upstage the North-West in the race for the Vice President is unfair, unjust, condemnable and portends grave danger for the unity of the North in particular and Nigeria in general, moreso, this will endanger the geo-political power equation in the country.

“We wish to urge Mr. President to do what is right. The North-West should be considered for the position of Vice President. Anything to the contrary will amount to shutting out the North- West from the centre of power in Nigeria. That step would definitely not be in the strategic interest of Mr. President”
