THE rift between President Jonathan and his estranged godfather, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has been watered down as mere misunderstanding between a political godson and his father.

One of the campaign chiefs of President Jonathan, Chief Akin Osuntokun, who was a former aide to Obasanjo, made this known in a chat with The Guardian.

He stressed that Obasanjo is both a national and international opinion leader and that no Nigerian president or political leader would want to incur his hostility.

On Obasanjo’s goodwill attendance at the wedding ceremony of the President’s daughter, last week, Osuntokun said: “I take life as it comes. Quarrels are common within members of the same family, not to talk of friends or political associates. I am not happy at the state of the relationship between the two personalities, especially as I want to believe they both mean well for the country. (But) all things that have a beginning equally will end one day.”

He re-emphasised his constraint speaking publicly on the feud on account of his relationship with Jonathan and Obasanjo.

Despite repeated interventions by eminent personalities within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the feud between the President and his political godfather appears to have reached new heights as President Jonathan continues to respond to remarks by the former president. But the quarrel, according to Osuntokun, may possibly be ebbing.
