From Niyi Bello, Akure THE 15th edition of free treatment through surgeries and distribution of corrective eyeglasses to indigent residents plagued by eye ailments by the Ondo State government was concluded at the weekend with about one thousand beneficiaries. Tagged "eye camp," the programme is one of the components of the Ondo State government's healthcare initiative to solve the health problems of the indigent population.

The last exercise conducted at the Millennium Eye Centre in the Akure Specialist Hospital had a team of eye surgeons and specialists dealt with cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation surgeries on patients mainly from the Central Senatorial District.

Out of the 150 patients discovered to be suffering from cataract, 54 of them were found suitable for corrective surgeries and were operated upon in the first two days of the exercise while 700 glasses were distributed to those whose cases could be tackled with lens correction.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the four-day programme, Commissioner for Health, Lawrence Adegbemiro, said the gesture “is an evidence of this administration’s unrelenting efforts to get good and qualitative health care to the people of Ondo State.”
