Nigeria pledges to assist Sierra Leone on its NYSC implementation

The Federal Government has pledged to assist the Government of Sierra Leone in the review and smooth implementation of its National Youth Service (NYS).Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC); Sule Kazaure who disclosed this when the presidential adviser on youth, Dr. Sheikhu Kamara and board chairman of Sierra Leone NYS, Prof. David Komora led a seven-man delegation to his office said the scheme had become a symbol of national unity and solidarity, and because of this unique role many African leaders were seeking to establish same in their countries.

He said the NYSC had introduced and initiated programmes over the years, which have insured the sustenance and growth of the scheme.Kazaure, who explained that the scheme now mobilizes over 300,000 every year, assured the delegation of Nigerian government’s support.

Earlier in his address, Dr Kamara said the delegation was in Nigeria to learn from the experience of the NYSC.“Nigeria is not only leading us as a nation in West Africa, we are very proud to look up to it as the big brother we have in Africa, followed by South Africa.

He pointed out that Sierra Leone has been struggling to set up the NYS scheme for a period of time; before its eventual launch last year by President Ernest Koroma.

He noted that since Nigeria’s scheme had been in existence for about 44 years, it has become the pride of African states, which informed their decision to visit and tap from the experience, achievements and challenges of the scheme.

“We are delighted that Nigeria has an exemplary scheme that has existed from 1973, and we have come to learn about the success and challenges of its existence” he said.
