A human rights group, the Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People (CDRP) has condemned the new price regime announced by the junior Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, describing it as evil, anti-people and unacceptable.

In his reaction to the new pump price regime of N145 per litre of petrol, the Acting National Coordinator of the group, Waheed Saka described as escapist the development, saying that instead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government vigorously sanitising the oil industry, what it has done was to transfer the burden to already dejected and impoverished poor masses.

According to him, this is antithetical to the campaign promises of APC and Buhari and therefore must be halted by popular struggle.

“At a time 24 states of the federation are no longer viable, at a time workers and pensioners are groaning under unending pains and pangs of nonpayment of pension and salary, at a time staple food are gradually becoming inaccessible by common man, to increase the pump price of petrol is not only insensitive but definitely evil and must be resisted,” he said.

Saka, therefore, called people on the people to “rise up and protest this unreasonable and anti-people tendencies to subject Nigerians to unending pains and pangs. Organised civil society groups must stand up and be counted to defend the right to decent life and condition of living.”
