NESREA warns against desertification in Gombe
THE National Environmental Standards Regulations Enforcement Agency has warned the people to desist from cutting trees illegally.
The North-East Zonal Co-ordinator of the agency, Mr. Abdullahi Bindawa, who gave the warning over the weekend while speaking with journalists in Gombe, said failure to do so would encourage desertification, adding that unnecessary cutting of trees in North-East will also create havoc.
Bindawa said the rate of destruction of trees is higher than the rate of planting in the zone, adding that planting of trees provides energy for human needs as well as food to plants.
According to him, a lot of forest reserves have been encroached by people, which he said, would lead to mass flooding and desertification.
The co-ordinator, urged the people not to burn bushes uneccesarily, saying that every Nigerian has a role to play to fight against land encroachment.
