NEMA to tackle disasters in Imo, Abia, identifies flashpoints

The authorities of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in Imo and Abia States have stepped up efforts in tackling natural and related disasters in various parts of the states. To achieve this, the agency has established inter-agencies collaborative working relationship with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the military and other sister security agencies.

Addressing some journalists yesterday, NEMA coordinator for Imo and Abia, Evans Ugoh, disclosed that flash point areas they had identified include routes such as Owerri-Port Harcourt, Owerri-Aba and Owerri-Onitsha roads, commending the security agencies for the public safety responses they gave during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
 
Reviewing the period, Ugoh, disclosed that there was 90 per cent decrease of natural and man made disasters in both states during the festive seasons, noting that the only incident was the multiple car collision along Aba-Owerri Road, which prompted the inter -agency intervention, expressing optimism that the victims were rescued timely.

Ugoh cautioned road users and the general public against activities that could ‘’lead to unwarranted emergency situations.’’ He disclosed that the agency would increase efforts on sensitisation awareness campaigns to ensure public safety in both states.
