The Nigerian Navy yesterday said it would commence a three-day sea exercise codenamed Eagle Eye II in Port Harcourt, Rivers State today.

A statement by the Acting Director of Information, Navy Captain Suleman Dahun in Abuja, said the exercise would involve the deployment of several capital ships, naval helicopters and patrol boats.

Dahun added that the objective of the exercise was to assess the readiness and operational efficiency of the Navy Fleet and the capability of operation commands in the conduct of riverine and choke point operations.

He said during the operation, naval drills, such as communication and gunnery exercises, man overboard and ship maneuvers among others will be conducted.

“The exercise will also demonstrate to the public Navy operational engagements and other efforts to address contemporary challenges in the maritime environment.

“It will also create an enabling environment for sustenance of desired level of hydrocarbon production, safety of shipping and other economic activities in the Niger Delta area and the Economic Exclusive Zone for national development.

“It is expected that at the end of the Exercise, investors’ confidence on the security in the Nigerian maritime environment will be strengthened,” the statement reads.
