Farmers in Taraba State have been urged to, as a matter of urgency, key into the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrowers programme in order to enhance their productivity and improve their living conditions.

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Jumai Alhassan, made the call yesterday in Jalingo, saying the Federal Government initiated the scheme to support farmers with infrastructure, farm inputs and marketing of their farm produce.

She said she had assisted a group of farmers in Gassol Local Council of the state to acquire 2,000 hectares of land for estate rice farming, adding that the group, Food Security and Agricultural Product Limited, comprised over 6,000 politicians and farmers.

The Minister said she has as well use her connection to secure the lands from individual volunteers who expected lease fees and farm produce in return.

She expressed dismay over the inability of the group to secure land from the state government for the programme despite several applications.

Optimistic that the project would succeed, Alhassan said she hoped to secure more land for the group in Bali Local Council of the state to expand the programme.

With estate rice farming, the state, she said, would take its rightful position, as a leader with enormous rice farming potentials in the country due to its closeness to the River Benue.

Alhassan said she would liaise with her associates and the Federal University, Wukari to support the programme by developing farm infrastructure and provision of farm inputs.
