Masquerade stabs job seeker to death hours before resuming at Dangote Cement

A masquerade, who stabbed a young applicant, Femi Makanjuola, aged 30, to death in Akure, Ondo State capital, has been arrested by the police.
The deceased, who just got employment with Dangote Group of Companies, was expected to resume his new job on Monday, but met his untimely death on Saturday evening.
The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred at Olomoyeye Street, Oke-Aro area of Akure, when the victim stepped out of the house to buy some condiments to cook the beans he put on fire.
While parading the suspect at the state headquarters yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, disclosed that the chief priest of the masquerade and cult had been arrested.
Joseph said preliminary investigation had begun into the matter and the suspects were already assisting the police with relevant information.
He identified the masquerade as Olu Olowokere, aged 35.
His words: “All over the world what we know about masquerade dance is to entertain people.
What happened in Akure was to the contrary. Five young boys were on an outing with one of them acting as a masquerade, and they got to where Makanjuola was.
The masqueraders demanded money, which the deceased refused to give and this did not go down well with them.
“The argument led to the stabbing of the deceased after he had been thoroughly beaten by the masquerade and his followers.
Investigation is ongoing towards apprehending other accomplices involved in the crime.”
The PPRO added that the Chief Priest, Adaramola Ajuloko, aged 75 and others at large, Deji Dada of Jeje Street, Danjuma, Akure and Sunday Adaramola of Gaga Street, would be charged to court and prosecuted accordingly.
A source, who pleaded anonymity, narrated that the deceased was stopped by the masquerade and his acolyte who demanded money from him, but refused to oblige their demands.
According to him, “he was preparing to cook beans and had gone to a nearby shop for ingredients to spice up the food when he met his death.
“Makanjuola resided with his brother, he had just secured a job with Dangote Cement Company in Benin City with the hope of resuming office on Monday, October 8.”
He disclosed that the masquerade and his acolyte stabbed Makanjuola to death after he declined their request to give them money.
Another source said there had been an alteration between the victim and father of the assailant some weeks ago but was said to have been resolved peaceably by mother of the deceased, Mrs. Monisola Awosanmi.
Awosanmi confirmed the recent misunderstanding between her slain son and father of the alleged killer.
But Olowokere denied his involvement in the killing, insisting that one of his followers and acolytes stabbed the victim while they were roaming the city.
He said: “I am not the one. It is one of the two masquerades that accompanied me that committed the crime.
They went back to town after the outing, which I didn’t authorize.
It is when police came to my house that I realized what the boys had done. They are currently on the run.”
