Palpable fear gripped residents of Ezimuku community, Agbaja in Abatete, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State at the weekend after a young man, Ifeanyi Oguejiofor, killed his father, Mr. Osita Joseph Oguejiofor, and stabbed his mother, Mrs. Josephine Oguejiofor, in a tragic incident.

The 27-year-old man reportedly killed his father for allegedly refusing to buy a new motorcycle for him. It was gathered that Ifeanyi stabbed his father to death with a kitchen knife and also stabbed his mother severally with the same knife. His mother, however, survived the onslaught.

An eyewitness said Ifeanyi also stabbed himself severally, apparently in a bid to commit suicide, but he did not succeed. The eyewitness said: “Trouble started that fateful day at about 8:00a.m. when the young man, a commercial motorcycle operator, approached his father and demanded the money he had requested from him for the procurement of a new motorcycle since the one he was using for the business had become old and was giving him a lot of trouble.

“His father told him that he had no money to buy a new motorcycle, but that he would buy a new engine for the one he was using. The father’s response did not go down well with him and so he made straight for the kitchen, grabbed the kitchen knife and pounced on his father, stabbing him repeatedly on the neck and shoulder till he slumped and gave up the ghost.

“After dealing with his father, he descended on the mother, who was crying for help when her husband was under attack by their son. He stabbed her on the ribs and shoulder and as she fell on the ground, he thought she was also dead. He then began to stab himself, apparently to commit suicide, but passers-by and neighbours intervened by alerting local vigilance group and the police who promptly arrested him. Ifeanyi later said that he did what he did because his spirit asked him to do it.”

According to sources, the man was arrested by the Abatete vigilance group, handcuffed and handed over to the Anambra State police command.Another eyewitness said the deceased compound was deserted by neighbours for fear of being arrested by the police, with few sympathizers hanging around bewildered at the ugly development. He said the late Oguejiofor, a businessman, who lives in Onitsha, visited home at the weekend to be with his family who were living in the village. “On this fateful occasion, he visited following the family’s marriage feast, not knowing that his life would be cut short by his own blood.

“According to the wife of the deceased, who survived being stabbed to death, the killer son has since Friday been demanding money from her and his father and their inability to give him the money immediately turned into the sad event.

“The 27-year-old Ifeanyi, after killing his father, went to a shrine in front of his father’s house and splashed the blood on the deity. He has been arrested by the police and investigation into the matter has commenced,” one Okoli Osita told The Guardian yesterday.

When contacted for confirmation of the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State police command, Mrs. Nkeiruka Nwode’s mobile number was unreachable. However, the Divisional Police Officer of Ogidi, Mr. Mark Ijarafu, confirmed the incident, saying the body of Ifeanyi’s father had been deposited at Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital mortuary, Ogidi, while the mother was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment. The DPO added that the suspect was still being detained, while investigation into the incident was ongoing.
