LG boss decries rising rate of cult activities

The Chairman, Badagry Local Government Council, Mr Olusegun Onilude, on Tuesday decried the rising rate of cultism and the activities of gangsters in the area.

Onilude made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry, Lagos State, saying that the council had recorded many cult clashes and disturbances by gangsters in the last three months.

“There have been several cults and gang-related clashes that have been happening in Badagry in recent times, especially in the Marina area and this isn’t good at all for the image of the town.

“People, especially the youths in this council area, must learn to eschew violence because such barbaric behaviour cannot help them towards achieving their potential.

“The Youth should focus on education and acquire vocational skills to help their cause and shun all forms of cult and gang-related activities because they do more harm than good, even to those involved.

“We are also committed to rendering assistance to the jobless youth who indulge in cultism as various programmes have been worked out for them,’’ he said.

Onilude, however, commended the security agencies for safeguarding the lives and property of the people in the area.

“The security agencies must be commended for the various arrests of cultists and for safeguarding the lives and property of people in the council area.

“However, the important thing is for the youths to change their orientation to be able to see for themselves that cult and gang activities are not good and that they were against the law.

“Perpetrators of such acts would be arrested and the full wrath of the law would be visited upon them,’’ he warned.
