A HUMAN rights lawyer, Mr. Anselem Eyo, has described the spate of calls by individuals and groups asking President Muhamadu Buhari not to start his probe from the immediate past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan as unnecessary and uncalled for.

According to him, these groups should be questioned because they had the opportunity to ask President Jonathan to do what his successor is doing now, wondering where they were before now.

He further described the development as an innovation that should be embraced by all, irrespective of religion, ethnic or political affiliations, adding that, it is a feat usually associated with pathfinders.

The police officer turned lawyer told The Guardian in Uyo that, instead of the people dictating to Mr. President on where or when to start the probe, they should petition the presidency and state names of whom they know were corrupt but were not probed. “My view is that, where have all these people been, whether individual or groups, when probe was not an issue in Nigeria.

So if somebody has started to probe, they should give him free hands and not dictate because they had the opportunity to have asked the previous government to probe.

If they feel strongly against anybody who have not been probed, they should petition that such a person be investigated. “You can make allegations against anybody, however, wherever he wants to start is welcome, it is an innovation.

I don’t belong to any political party,” he said. On whether Mr. President can conclude this arduous task within his tenure, he said “Government is a continuum, so if he cannot finish within his tenure, another person who takes over from him will continue from where he stopped.”

President Buhari, let us not be apprehensive about it, let us not be afraid about what has not come, let us start and recover the stolen money”, he added. He expressed worries some former state governors who do not want to be probed, noting that, such persons may still be leaving in the past as the present leadership has promised that, there would be no sacred cow in the fight against corrupt persons in the country.
