LASPOTECH students protest against indefinite strike by teachers

Final year students of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) yesterday protested against the ongoing indefinite strike in the institution.The protesters, who chanted solidarity songs, marched to the Lagos State House of Assembly complex and the Governor’s Office, Alausa, carrying placards with various inscriptions such as: ‘Lagos at 50, LASPOTECH in disarray’; ‘Please save LASPOTECH, we want to resume, Governor Ambode ejo e epp’; ‘Bedrock of technology is at risk, let’s save our future’, among others.

The student’s union president, Dauda Lawal, expressed worries that the students, who were slated to graduate in June 2017, are being unnecessarily delayed because of the indefinite strike.

“We requested to see the governor, he sent a representative. We requested to see the Speaker of the Assembly, he also sent a representative. We have been on strike for more than a month and under normal circumstances, we are supposed to graduate in June, but now, it is going to be extended till September, that is if steps are taken to call off the strike today. The institution does not have hostels, our rents will expire in June this year, now the strike has extended our stay on campus,” he lamented.

Addressing the protesters, Special Adviser to the governor on Education, Fela Bank-Olemoh, assured the students that necessary steps were in place to ensure their resumption next week.In the same vein, Segun Olulade, representing Epe constituency II, assured the students that they would return to campus soon.
