LAPO fetes women at leadership award

Founder, Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO), Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe, has described as unacceptable in the country the obnoxious social norms, political exclusion and economic lopsidedness, which dictates the presence and voice of women in public life.

Speaking at the weekend in Benin city during the 6th LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award, Ehigiamusoe lamented that cultural practices in many African countries has often rendered women invisible and subservient to their male counterparts.

Ehigiamusoe, who decried the difficulty faced by women to participate in political and economic activities in a bid to live a comfortable and productive life, said: “The average Nigerian woman is challenged with issues of violence, disinheritance, forced marriage, wife inheritance, harsh widowhood practices, sexual harassment, rape and human trafficking among others.

Represented by board member of LAPO, Eddy Aghimien, said women engagement in the informal sector and farming, which sustain the economy and society are unrecognized.
