Kerosene dealers in Delta State have raised the alarm over suspected adulterated products being sold in the state.

Some of the dealers, who spoke to our reporter in Asaba yesterday, disclosed that the adulterated kerosene sells cheaper than the original product made by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The Guardian leant that operators of illegal refineries in the Niger-Delta region are producing the products in the creeks.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) the Central Naval Command, (CNC), Rear Admiral Mohammed Garba told journalists that naval personnel had destroyed over 42 illegal refinery camps.

Also destroyed were about 3, 000 metric tons of crude oil suspected to be stolen and 1, 000 metric tons of illegally refined diesel oil wells.

He said the navy had uncovered many illegal refineries in the past three weeks, which were built in the creeks by some ex-militants in the region.

It was further leant that the adulterated kerosene, which is yellow and emits offensive odour, is being produced in the creeks of Warri-South West, Warri South and Warri North.

The adulterated product is said to attract higher patronage because it is cheaper at N250 per litre, as against the N300 and N350 sold by the NNPC.

Some traders in Asaba, Warri, Ughelli and Agbor who spoke to our reporter, said the adulterated kerosene has flooded the markets, as unsuspecting users struggle to buy it.

Garba promised that the perpetrators of the crime would be brought to book.

Also, an official of the NNPC who did not want his name in print blamed the illegality on jobless youths, adding that efforts were being made to curtail the situation.
