Katsina State government has announced plans to domesticate the Child Rights Act in line with tradition and religion of people in the state. To this end, a five-member technical committee has been raised to study the Act and seek stakeholders’ input on the issue.

The committee is part of effort to ensure that the Act, which had generated controversy in the state, receives stakeholders’ approval before it is implemented. It was learnt that the Act had passed first and second reading at the last state House of Assembly.

The Act was however thrown out by the lawmakers following the criticism its content had generated by Islamic scholars. The technical committee to study the Act was inaugurated at the weekend at a meeting attended by UNICEF and Save the Children.

Others in attendance included officials of the state ministry of women affairs, religious and traditional rulers, as well as legal practitioners.Speaking at the meeting, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Barira Mashi called on members of the committee to seek input from Katsina and Daura emirates for their assignment.

Mashi said the committee should study the document with a view to domesticating it in line with the religion and culture of the people. She said the committee should translate the document into Hausa language for advocacy purposes to stakeholders.

She said part of the assignment of the committee is to study similar child rights acts practised in Kaduna, Yobe and other Islamic countries.Mashi said the committee should also come up with a new draft document for submission and discussion on it during next stakeholders meeting.

She said the committee was given four weeks to complete its assignment.Responding, the Chairman of the Technical Committee and Chief Judge of the state, Justice Sadiq Mahuta pledged to work with stakeholders to achieve the objective of the committee.
