AFTER the 21 days ultimatum given to occupants of residential houses and other buildings erected on public land in Zaria, the Kaduna State Government on Wednesday commenced the demolition of these illegal structures.

Also, the government has marked houses along College Road in Kaduna metropolis for demolition, including a residential building belonging to the former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Felix Hassan Hyet.

The state government however said it would not compensate owners of unauthorised houses built on land belonging to government schools and hospitals.

Hyet, however, threatened to sue the state government if his house is demolished.

The General Manager, Kaduna State Urban Development Authority, Mrs. Saratu Hassan, confirmed that no compensation would be considered for those who built their houses on public land, while the demolition of unauthorized houses belonging to private owners occupying the premises of Alhuda-huda College Zaria was going on Wednesday.

She argued that government would not reverse its decision to pull down illegal structures on school premises and other government areas, pointing out that after the reclaiming exercise within schools and hospitals premises has been completed, the bulldozers would move to other places in the state.

Hassan said, “about 32 houses would be affected”, adding, “Kaduna State government has given the department the mandate to ensure those who built structures illegally on plots in schools and hospitals premises vacate.

“That is why we are here at Alhuda-huda College Zaria to commence demolition of illegal structures. When we are through we will move to other areas all over the state.”

Meanwhile, the former aviation minister, whose house was also marked for demolition, while speaking with journalists said, “I have valid documents and paid government for the land before erecting the building. So I expect adequate compensation if my house is to be demolished.”
