After all the intrigues and computations on the salary payments of about 40,000 workers in the employ of Imo State government, the 15 member committee has settled that workers would be paid a total of N3, 373,826,736,67.

Of the amount, workers would be paid N2.8 billion, while the retirees will earn only January pension of over N1 billion, while efforts will be made to pay arrears of the retirees.

Briefing newsmen at the Government House, Owerri, on Wednesday, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Austin Chilakpu, said though the total required amount for the payment of salaries and pensions for the month of January 2016, was N5.3 billion, only the above-stated sum was available to workers based on the 70 / 30 per cent agreement reached between the workers and government.

Chilapku, accompanied by Chairman of the Committee, Ikenna Emeh, a lawyer, and the Chairman of the Public Service Negotiating Council, Augustina Ogini, said any shortfall as a result, would be paid to workers in future, urging workers and those involved to bear with the situation, resulting in the sharing formula of resources accrued to the state.

He said: “The 70 % of the gross revenue for the month of January is N3, 373,826,736.67. Given the Committee verified wage bill of salary and pension for the month, which stood at N5.3 billion, the committee is saddled with a differential of about N1.9 billion.

“Consequently, the committee has in the application of the N3, 373,826,736.67, to the settlement of salary and pension due to the workers and has decided to pay salary earners in the state 70 % of their salary across board while making reservations for pensions.”
